Legal Requirements
You need to apply for a marriage licence up to three months before your wedding day. See here for more details. The cost for a marriage licence is $150. You will receive your marriage documents by email as PDF attachments. Please check all details are correct and forward them to me. I will print them out for your ceremony. I also recommend you apply for a marriage certificate at the same time for an additional $33. This will be sent to you after your wedding once your marriage has been registered. This certificate is often required as proof of legal status for example when you are renewing your passport.
You need to show photo ID to me sometime before the ceremony.
During the ceremony, I’m required to use your full official names.
You need to have two witnesses at the ceremony. They must not be intoxicated and must be able to understand what’s happening. If the witnesses speak a different language and don’t understand English, you’ll need an interpreter. The interpreter has to sign a declaration before the ceremony to say they’ll interpret accurately what is said in the ceremony. You, (the couple) and the witnesses, sign the documents using your pre-marriage signatures during the ceremony. If you have any questions about having an interpreter, just ask me.
After the wedding, I give you one copy of the signed document and send the other copy to Births Deaths and Marriages where your marriage is registered.
